Wayward Bus (tel (08) 8410 8833; website www.waywardbus.com.au) is more a tour company than an independent travel option, but they do have some excellent trips that allow you to discover some great out-of-the-way places including the Flinders Ranges, Central Australia and Kangaroo Island. They’re also well known for their Great Ocean Road trip in Victoria.
