Australia has a multitude of specialised bus services operated specifically for backpackers. Some of these include very useful services stopping off at hostels and also making detours to attractions that the express coaches miss. However some of these so-called backpacker buses are simply tours, and this runs against the spirit of backpacking and independent travel.
Oz Experience is biggest backpacker bus operator and has routes covering most of the country. It represents a good travel option.
Some smaller companies also offer excellent transport options within a particular region and they often have the benefit of local knowledge.
If you’re thinking about buying a pass for one of the smaller backpacker bus companies, first check whether it really caters for independent travellers – allowing you to get on and off as you please – if it doesn’t offer this sort of flexibility then it is nothing but a tour.
