Townsville has a few great spots for inexpensive dining including Harold’s Seafood on the Strand (Shop 5/58 The Strand, North Ward), which has excellent fish and chips and Molly Malone’s (87-95 Flinders Street, Townsville) with cheap backpacker pub meals. The Strand has some more upmarket cafés and restaurants, while Gregory Street (just off the Strand to the north) gives way to unpretentious seafood markets, healthy eateries and fast food joints. Thai, Greek, French and Italian restaurants can also be found on Gregory Street. The Flinders Street Mall has a few good spots, although most of the mall is due for demolition in the near future to make way for a modern multi-story shopping complex.
If you’re preparing your own food you can find a couple of supermarkets in the city centre including Coles (136 Ogden Street, Townsville) and Woolworths on Walker Street.
There are several good bars in Flinders Street in the city centre including the Brewery (252 Flinders Street, Townsville), which is a very popular spot with locals and visitors for nights out drinking. On Palmer Street in South Townsville you can find cheap pubs, cafés and Italian restaurants.
