Rockhampton

Eating & drinking

There is not a big variety of food in Rockhampton.

The big draw here of course is the excellent steak and you will see signs for cheap steak dinners on virtually every street in the city centre. They are almost always a great deal as the steaks are exceptionally large. The unassuming restaurant below Ascot Backpackers (177 Musgrave Street, North Rockhampton) is noted for its excellent stone grill steak and is a must if you’re staying at their hostel.

There are also a few good Chinese restaurants that may not look like much, but they serve up generous meals at low prices. You will also find a lot of fast food like KFC, McDonalds and Pizza Hut along the main highway through town.

There are several supermarkets and more cheap places to eat in the Stockland shopping centre in North Rockhampton (corner Musgrave Street & Bruce Highway, North Rockhampton).

You can get a cheap hearty dinner at many of Rocky’s pubs. The Bush Inn Bar & Grill (corner Fitzroy & Quay Streets, Rockhampton) is a favourite with locals and visitors alike; they also usually have long happy hours, but the nightlife from there fizzles out, so stop by a bottle shop for beer if you want to make it a long night. This is a hard working town, so many of the pubs are quiet at night. The pub beneath the Downtown Backpackers (corner Denham & East Streets, Rockhampton) can be an exception on the weekends, and they have cheap beer.
