Newcastle has good transport connections including an airport plus bus and train services. Generally the train is the cheaper way to get to Sydney whereas buses are cheaper for places north of Newcastle.
Newcastle Airport (website www.newcastleairport.com.au) is at Williamtown at the western end of Port Stephens. It is a fast-growing airport with flights to Adelaide, Canberra, Brisbane and Melbourne. It is served by Jetstar, Qantas, Tiger Airways and Virgin Blue.
The bus between Newcastle Airport and the train station in the city centre costs $4.80.
The bus terminal is behind the train station. There are buses to destinations all the way up the east coast as far as Cairns as well as buses to Sydney and Port Stephens.
Newcastle is part of the CityRail network with frequent trains to Sydney. The train journey between Newcastle and Sydney Central should take around three hours. Trains heading further north stop at Broadmeadow station, which is about five stations out of town on the CityRail system.
