Newcastle has a good public transport network that is made up of buses, trains and ferries.
Buses (website www.newcastlebuses.info) are the most common form of transport for most travellers.
All bus tickets are good for unlimited rides within a one-hour, four-hour or all day period.
A one-hour ticket is $3, four-hour tickets cost $5.90 and an all day ticket costs $9. A ten-trip ticket is also available and costs $24.70. Weekly passes cost $39 for bus and ferry travel and $47-50 for bus, ferry and train travel.
Ferries run at half-hour intervals between Queens Wharf near the main train station and Stockton on the north shore of the Hunter River. The ferry costs $2.10 one-way.
The CityRail (website www.cityrail.info) network serves the western and southern suburbs.
Train fares in the Newcastle area generally cost between $2.60 and $4.60 for a one-way ticket. Return tickets cost twice the one-way fare with the exception of off-peak return tickets that cost between $3.60 and $6.40. Off-peak return tickets are equivalent to a cheap day return and must be purchased after 9am.
