Newcastle

Eating & Drinking

For a mostly industrial city, Newcastle has a surprisingly good restaurant, café and pub scene. Newcastle has the usual selection of fast food places in the city centre, but there are more diverse eating and drinking options just outside the centre in Cooks Hill and Hamilton.

Beaumont Street in Hamilton (bus 201, 222, 226, 230, 231, 235, 317, 322, 334, 349, 350, 363 train Hamilton), a couple of kilometres west of the city centre, is a good spot for Mediterranean influenced food with a selection of Greek and Italian restaurants as well as a thriving café and pub scene. This neighbourhood is a handy place to eat and drink for travellers staying at Backpackers Newcastle.

Darby Street in Cooks Hill (bus 310, 311), just south of the city centre, is a diverse neighbourhood with a vibrant café scene and some nice restaurants.
