Launceston’s major attraction is the spectacular Cataract Gorge. The gorge is about a 15-minute walk from the centre of Launceston and there are several lovely walks within the Cataract Gorge Reserve.
The reserve is also home to the Duck Reach Power Station, which was the first hydroelectric power station in the Southern Hemisphere when it was constructed in 1895.
Launceston’s most important museum has two branches – at Royal Park and at Inveresk. The Royal Park museum is home to a Chinese temple, decorative arts and an exhibit of metals in Tasmania. The Inveresk museum has an art gallery plus exhibits on migration and railways. There are plans to give the Inveresk museum more of a focus on science and develop the Royal Park museum into a world-class gallery of decorative and fine arts.
