Launceston is a pretty good place for eating out, particularly when you consider the city’s small size.
There are plenty of places around the city centre for a quick bite at lunchtime including the usual selection of fast food places and food courts. Morty’s Food Hall (25 Wellington Street, Launceston) has a good selection of cheap tasty food.
Launceston has some good pubs that serve substantial meals. These include Irish Murphy’s (211 Brisbane Street, Launceston), an Irish pub with a hostel upstairs and good hearty pub food and the more upmarket Royal on George (90 George Street, Launceston) – a historic pub with good atmosphere, live music and tasty food. As far as Tasmanian pubs go, Hotel Tasmania, aka the Launceston Saloon, (191 Charles Street, Launceston) is nothing special – and the Wild West décor is a bit tacky; but it does have very cheap food such as roast of the day for $6.95.
If you’re preparing your own food, the cheapest option is the Coles (198 Charles Street, Launceston) and Woolworths (128 Wellington Street, Launceston) supermarkets.
