Cascade Brewery

The factory tour of Australia’s oldest brewery is very popular with backpackers. Like all good brewery tours, there’s free beer awaiting you at the end. Tours are popular and it’s essential to phone ahead to make a booking.

Female Factory Historic Site

This former prison is the female equivalent to Port Arthur and female convicts were kept here between 1828 and 1877.

Maritime Museum

This is an interesting museum exploring Tasmania’s maritime past with exhibits on whaling and shipwrecks.

Mercury Print Museum

Housed in one of Tasmania’s oldest buildings, this museum focuses on newspaper publishing and the history of printing.

Mount Wellington

If you have a car an excursion to the summit of Mount Wellington is a must. The views of the city from here are spectacular and on a clear day you can see half of Tasmania.
Mount Wellington Shuttle Bus Service (tel 0408 341 804) leaves the city centre for Mt Wellington Mon-Fri 9.30am, noon & 2.30pm, Sat-Sun 9.30am, 1.30pm. The return fare is $25.


Alternatively Island Cycle Tours (tel 1300 880 334) run trips to the summit of Mt Wellington with a downhill mountain bike ride back to Hobart. The trip takes around three hours and costs $75.

This museum and gallery exhibits modern Australian art and artefacts depicting Tasmania’s convict history.
