Hobart

Eating & drinking

Tasmania has a reputation for excellent food, but it’s noted mainly for quality ingredients like salmon and King Island creams and cheeses rather than its restaurants.

From a budget traveller’s perspective, the best value meals are the fish and chip shops around Constitution and Victoria Docks. Mure’s (Constitution Dock, Hobart) is the biggest fish and chip place and is a Hobart landmark with a brilliant location right in the centre of Constitution Dock. It’s nice and dry on a rainy day but if the sun is shining one of the other four small fish and chips shops on Constitution Dock may be a better – and cheaper – option. Also recommended is Fish Frenzy (Elizabeth Street Pier, Hobart), which is just a short walk away.

Tasmania has Australia’s best beer and some of Australia’s best pubs are in the historic area around Salamanca Place. Salamanca Place, and nearby Salamanca Square, also have a good choice of nice restaurants and cafés.

On Saturdays go to Salamanca Market for both the fast food stalls and fresh fruit and picnic food. When the market isn’t open your best bet is to head to either the small supermarket on Salamanca Place or the Woolworths supermarket (189 Campbell Street, Hobart) in the city centre.
