Richmond is a small town with plenty of buildings dating from convict times.
It is a popular destination for day-trippers from Hobart with the usual collection of cafés, craft shops and guesthouses. The main attractions here include Australia’s oldest Catholic church, Australia’s oldest bridge and the nearby river where you can feed the ducks.
Richmond Gaol is the most authentic reminder of the town’s convict history.
Tassielink (tel 1300 300 520) run buses between Hobart and Richmond. The Richmond Tourist Bus (tel 0408 341 804) is another, more expensive, option with two daily services between Hobart and Richmond.
Australia’s oldest existing colonial prison is well preserved and offers the only surviving example of female solitary confinement cells in Tasmania as well as an extensive collection of convict relics.
