Victoria’s oldest town was once a busy whaling port but it’s now an industrial city that
is dominated by a big aluminium smelter. Travellers that are interested in Australian
maritime history will no doubt find the place interesting although many travellers
bypass Portland altogether.

V/line (tel 13 22 32) buses go to Warrnambool and Mount Gambier in South Australia. Buses stop at Hently Plaza.
There are two bus routes in Portland. Route 1 covers the area north of the town centre
and route 2 goes south of the centre.
This excellent Maritime Discovery Centre has a number of interesting exhibits focusing on
local shipwrecks. It also features a huge skeleton of a sperm whale.
