Port Lincoln

Port Lincoln is a busy fishing port on Boston Bay, the world’s second-largest natural harbour.


Commercial fishing is the main industry with a big tuna exporting business that has made the town very wealthy. Port Lincoln is a popular destination for amateur anglers from Adelaide and some backpackers visit for the opportunity to swim with sea lions and tuna.

Coming & Going

AIR

Rex (tel 13 17 13) flies to Port Lincoln from Adelaide. The flight takes 45 minutes and is the best option if you’re travelling on a Rex backpacker air travel pass. The airport is around 10km north of Port Lincoln.

BUS

Premier Stateliner (tel (08) 8682 1288) buses go to Adelaide via Whyalla and Port Augusta. Buses stop at 24 Lewis Street.

Sights & Activities

Axel Stenross Maritime Museum

This maritime museum is in the boat building workshop established by the Finnish boat builder, Axel Stenross. It features nautical exhibits with an emphasis on windjammer sailing boats.

Swimming with Sealions & Tuna

Adventure Bay Charters (tel 0488 428 862 (0488 I C TUNA)) run unique tours that give you the opportunity to swim with sealions and tuna.


The tuna tours involve a 15-minute cruise to a tuna farm where you can feed the tuna from a purpose-built pontoon and also swim with the fish. Don’t be fooled by those tiny cans in the supermarket, tuna really are big fish! Tuna tours cost $55.


Sealion tours involve a 1½ hour cruise to Hopkins Island where you can swim with sealions. On the way back the tour stops at the tuna farm where you can swim with the tuna. Sealion tours cost $160.


Both tours depart from the jetty at the Marina Hotel.
