Fitzroy Island is larger than Green Island. It is also a national park that offers good snorkelling. There are also a couple of hiking trails on the island and also some good beaches.
Fitzroy Island is about the same distance from Cairns as Green Island, but it is less crowded, cheaper to get to and a more popular destination among backpackers.
A $5 national park fee is payable by visitors to the island.
The Fitzroy Flyer (tel (07) 4030 7907) takes 45 minutes to sail from Cairns to the island. The return trip costs $45.
Several Cairns-based dive courses operate from here (see the Cairns Sights & Activities section for more information).
Raging Thunder runs daytrips to Fitzroy Island, which include the ferry trip over and sea kayaking to the more remote parts of the island.
