With a population of about 28,000, Alice Springs is much like any other small country town, but it is the only major town in central Australia and is almost 1000km to the nearest town of a similar size.
Alice is a good spot to explore the surrounding area. It lies at the foot of the world’s oldest mountain range, the MacDonnell Ranges, and is a popular stopping-off point for travellers on their way to Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Attractions and diversions include the Alice Springs Desert Park and several outback institutions such as the School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
