Bundaberg

Most travellers who come to Bundaberg, come to work on the nearby fruit farms and there are quite a few hostels that cater almost exclusively to travellers staying here to pick fruit. Another big reason backpackers make a stop here is the cheap prices on diving courses, but there are also some nice things to see in the area.

Bundaberg is an industrial town full of farmers and families. There are several old heritage buildings of architectural interest along Bourbong Street, including the School of Arts and the Post Office clock tower. The Botanic Gardens, with its pretty lakes and shady trees, is also worth a visit. The Bundaberg Rum distillery is at the top of the list of must-do activities; you have a choice of tours and get a sample at the end.

If you’re visiting between November and March you should make a trip to Mon Repos Beach to watch the loggerhead turtles come ashore to lay their eggs.
