Alma Park Zoo

As well as Australian animals like kangaroos, koalas, emus, wombats, dingoes, goannas and possums in their natural surroundings, Alma Park Zoo is home to a wide range of exotic animals including monkeys, baboon, red deer, fallow deer, leopards, camels, water buffalo and sun bears.

Carlton Brewery

The large Carlton Brewery, located in the southern suburbs on the way to the Gold Coast, brews Carlton, Fosters and Victoria Bitter and offers tours that include samples. Bookings essential, but it is difficult to get to without a car.

Castlemaine Brewery

There are regular tours of the brewery that produces XXXX beer. Each 75-minute tour gives you the chance to learn more about how beer is made, learn a few bits of useless trivia and most importantly taste the finished product. Bookings recommended.

City Hall

City Hall is a major landmark in central Brisbane that features a clock tower with an observation deck with good views of the downtown area. The newly opened Museum of Brisbane (MoB) is on the ground floor.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary

Lone Pine is a large wildlife sanctuary with loads of native Australian animals including kangaroos and koalas as well as Tasmanian devils, wombats, dingoes and various reptiles. It is the world’s largest koala sanctuary with over 130 koalas.

Parliament House

If you’re interested in Queensland state politics, you may want to take advantage of the free tours of Parliament House, which run regularly.

Brisbane’s major art gallery has a large collection of Australian artworks.

Queensland Maritime Museum

The Queensland Maritime Museum is an excellent museum featuring a large range of nautical exhibits. The museum’s collection includes several vessels including steam tug SS Forceful and frigate HMAS Diamantina as well as several smaller boats.

Southbank Beach

Australia’s only artificial inland city beach holds three mega litres of water or approximately three Olympic size swimming pools and is surrounded by 4000m3 of sand from Rous Channel in Moreton Bay. It’s a great place to chill out on a hot summer day.

Story Bridge Adventure Climb

Brisbane’s iconic Story Bridge was designed by John Bradfield – who also designed the Sydney Harbour Bridge – with a cantilever design based on Montréal’s Jacques Cartier Bridge. The Story Bridge Adventure Climb is similar to Sydney’s Bridge Climb; the 2½ hour experience involves a 1km climb route that takes you to a viewing platform 80 metres above the Brisbane River.
